Designing for Material Affect

Course Description

This course investigates the ways in which we influence our surroundings and ourselves through the experience, utilization, and manipulation of materials. By studying and crafting with material affects, students gain the opportunity to explore the creation of physical and perceptual atmospheres. The course establishes a conceptual and practical foundation for exploring the connection between materials, affect, and the environment through project-based learning, culminating in a semester-long design project that examines these relationships and tests their validity through physical realization.

Permission Note Enrollment preference given to: upper level undergraduate students in FSAD, DEA, ARCH, and LARC majors, and graduate students with design backgrounds.

Outcomes

• Understand how affects shape and reshape sensorial and spatial experiences manifested through atmospheres/atmospherics.
• Utilize research, design, and fabrication techniques to construct material and immaterial affects focused on the qualities of human experiences.
• Access, understand, and respond to environmental, budgetary, and scheduling constraints, as well as material, political, and cultural contexts through a collaborative design and production process.
