This course is intended for graduate students to prepare them for a field exam in financial history, emphasizing the histories of the US, Britain, and France (though perhaps not equally) in the modern period. Students will learn both the history and historiographic debates over the history of finance in its connection to the ideas, institutions and practices of state formation, slavery, colonialism, economic crisis, industrialization, inequality and globalization.
