Implementation and Impact in Global and Public Health

This course examines the factors that compromise the impact of policies, programs and interventions in health, nutrition and other sectors, the strategies to address these and the ways in which implementation research can assist.  Case studies, analytical frameworks, guest speakers and classroom discussions are used to provide a deep understanding of "the implementation problem" and develop analytical skills applicable to a wide range of problems and settings.


Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: for GPHS students, NS 1600 and NS 2600 will be helpful.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: junior, senior or graduate standing. 

Outcomes

  • Describe the reasons for slow progress in addressing undernutrition, obesity and other public health or public policy problems.
  • Use conceptual frameworks to analyze case studies and strengthen the implementation of policies, programs and interventions.
  • Describe the many forms of research that can help strengthen implementation. Note: This course relates to the following DNS overall learning outcomes: "Integrate knowledge from the biological and social sciences to address nutrition and health problems facing individuals, societies and governments."
