Examines workplace health and safety in an international context using internationally accepted human rights principles as standards for judgment. The class will focus on workers who are at increased risk for injury and illness in a wide variety of regions and industries and the policies and strategies used to address these workers' health and safety. Topics covered include relevant United Nations and International Labour Organization (ILO) documents, historical perspectives, current situations, professional sports, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, freedom of association and worker health and safety, the use and misuse of scientific evidence, corporate social responsibility, and enforcement issues.
