This course focuses on the dialogues between French and Francophone intellectuals by exploring some of the main philosophical currents and concepts of French 20th-century thought alongside their rereading by major Francophone theorists and intellectuals. Throughout the semester, students will build a solid background in theoretical analysis and building upon their understanding of French and Francophone history.  Among various theories, we will explore the dialogues between Sartre, Césaire and Memmi; Merleau-Ponty and Fanon; the rereading of Bergson by Senghor; Edouard Glissant's understanding of Deleuze's philosophy; and the work of African philosophers such as Achille Mbembe and Souleymane Bachir Diagne.  The course aims at familiarizing students with important philosophical texts written in French from both French and Francophone authors, while developing student's ability to reflect and comment upon theoretical texts and expanding upon their skills in French.
