Global Seminar: Building Sustainable Environments and Secure Food Systems for a Modern World

Course Description

Industrialization has led to economic development pressures that have increasingly disrupted natural systems leading to widespread concerns about the long-term viability of important environmental and ecosystem services, including those critical to food security worldwide. Case studies are used to explore interrelationships among social, economic, and environmental factors basic to sustainable development. Cases examine contemporary "wicked problems" in the Age of the Anthropocene (e.g., structural poverty, food security and sovereignty, biodiversity, sustainable resource management, climate change, and our role in global responsibility). Cornell faculty members lead discussions in each of the major topic areas. In addition, students participate in discussions and debates with students from schools in Costa Rica, Honduras, China, Australia, and elswhere in the US through live interactive video-conferences and electronic discussion boards.
