Course Description
Course information provided by the 2014-2015 Catalog.
In this service-learning course, students partner with Cornell service staff to accomplish a variety of learning goals selected by the employees. Students are introduced to the field of adult basic education and the principles of the Community Learning and Service Partnership (CLASP). Seminars examine the issues of learning through service and reflection, adult teaching philosophy and practice, and empowerment through education.
Outcomes
- Students will develop a greater awareness and understanding of the service staff at Cornell University and a greater appreciation for their contribution to the community.
- Students will form a positive, teaching/mentoring relationship with a service worker.
- Students will recognize and question assumptions, improve communication skills, and broaden understanding of the experiences and perspectives of others (including similarities and differences).
- Students will cooperatively assess needs, establish goals, plan, and evaluate lessons with an adult learner while recognizing how power/empowerment impacts an adult learning relationship.
- Student will value their individual contributions to address a larger community need and become more predisposed to service and supporting efforts to provide adult learning in the future.
- Students will experience how personal growth, civic learning, and academic enhancement result from structured critical reflection in Service-Learning.
- Students will engage in reflective practice as a way to learn from experience.
- Students will recognize the influence of systemic inequities that limit members of certain groups in society.

Comments Students must commit to continuing their service by taking EDUC 2210 the subsequent semester.
