Feline Reproduction

Course Description

Course information provided by the 2014-2015 Catalog.

Emphasis is on reproduction in the domestic cat; however, aspects particular to reproduction in larger cats will also be presented. Students will learn the physiology of the normal reproductive cycle as well as some common disorders.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Recommended prerequisite: ANSC 2400.

Outcomes

• List the major events in the domestication of the common cat.
• Identify the major reproductive organs and describe the contribution or function of each.
• List the major hormones controlling the reproductive process, identify the target cells and list their products.
• List the stages of the estrous cycle and describe the differences between an induced or spontaneous ovulator.
• Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of determining pregnancy in the female.
• Describe the major events in parturition.
• Explain the consequences of uncontrolled reproduction and list the methods to regulate this process.
• Describe the new technologies applied to feline reproduction.
