This 8-day, 80-hour course from Wilderness Medical Associates provides the prerequisite training and certification necessary for employment as a professional outdoor instructor at nationally recognized programs such as NOLS and Outward Bound. The curriculum goes beyond the basics needed for first aid certification to emphasize the skills and knowledge needed in backcountry rescue situations when extended care may be needed.

    Course fee: $855. This is part one of a multi-semester course. Part one is $855, 0 credits, and held virtually on November 14, 2025 from 5-7pm. Part two is $0, 1 credit, and runs from January 12 until 19, 2026 from 8:00am - 6:00pm. You must attend part one in November in order to take part two in January: students are responsible for enrolling in the winter class (part 2). Students enrolled in this course who are living on-campus will need to find off-campus accommodations until the residential halls open. Participation in all class sessions in the fall and winter semesters is required to receive the 1 PE credit.
    Drop Deadline: Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Students will be responsible for the course fee and assessed a $50 late drop fee if they do not drop by the deadline.
