Environmental Engineering in an International Context I

The course connects the themes of culture, society, and water infrastructure in the context of the majority world. The goal of the course is to offer students an experiential learning opportunity, working with AguaClara partner organizations and civil society organizations in emerging markets. Students will learn about the challenges and opportunities of creating sustainable infrastructure, institutional networks, and technical backstopping for water, sanitation, and hygiene. Students will read about development theory and the social, political, and historical context of Honduras.

Outcomes

  • Develop an appreciation for the role of respectful relationships and win/win/win interactions in the creation of collaborative networks.
  • Develop a clearer understanding of the challenges and complexity of cross cultural collaboration designed to make the world a better place.
  • Develop the ability to analyze Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Interventions for common failure modes that include issues of technology, economics, governance, user preferences, and institutional capacity.
  • Develop the capacity to observe, document those observations, separate inference from observation, and reflect at a deeper level.

Comments Students selected by application. This is the first part of a multi-semester course. The second part will be offered as CEE 4561 in the winter and the third part will be offered as CEE 4562 in the spring. During the January intersession students travel to Honduras for an intensive engineering in context experience. Students must complete CEE 4560, CEE 4561 and CEE 4562 to receive a final grade.

  • Instruction Mode: In Person

    Students must enroll in CEE 4560 (fall), CEE 4561 (winter), and CEE 4562 (spring) to receive a final grade. Students will travel January 4 th, 2020 to Honduras and travel back to Ithaca on January 19, 2020. . Fee: approximately $2,000 (includes airport shuttle, airfare, local transportation, food, and lodging). Some merit and need-based financial aid may be available.
