Course information provided by the 2018-2019 Catalog.

New York City is the capital of capital, and through its history we are going to explore the history of capitalism in America. The course will focus on the history of class, work, finance, and business in New York City from the colonial era through World War I.  The purpose of the course, beyond learning about New York City, is to understand how historians create and recreate narratives about the past. In this seminar you will learn to read like a historian does—for argument as well as fact. You will also think deeply about how to use stories to make arguments.
