ITAL 3450

Course information provided by the 2017-2018 Catalog.

No other genre has been as historically loved and hated as the Western. In this course we will try to discover why that's so by looking at and thinking about the genre in its American and Italian versions.  What most characterizes the Western?  What are the differences when the Western travels to Europe and elsewhere?  Topics to be discussed include violence and racism, the role of the gun and gunslinger, and masculinity and the other role of women.  Films from Ford, Hawks, Tarantino, Leone, the Coen Brothers, and George Lucas.
