Fundamentals of Energy and Mineral Resources

Course Description

The Earth's energy and mineral resources are critical to human existence. The formation of resources reflects unusual aspects of the Earth including some of the most important changes and dramatic events that have punctuated earth history. The course provides an overview of resource types in the context of the Earth's atmospheric and tectonic evolution, the hydrologic cycle and other major earth processes related to volcanism, sedimentary basins and the seafloor. The processes of resource accumulation are described in terms of simple chemical and physical principles and in the societal contexts of supply, demand, and sustainability.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Recommended prerequisite: previous course in geology.
