Course Description
Course information provided by the 2016-2017 Catalog.
This course is an introduction to two aspects of ethnomedicine/ethnohealth: (1) the study of biology of health disparities like diabetes, cancer, and infectious diseases in Latinos/as, African Americans and American Indians in the United States, (2) and the botany, culture, and medical anthropology of plants and other natural remedies used by ancient cultures in the Americas and also currently used throughout the United States and the Americas.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: course work in biology and sociology and health or related area, or permission of instructor.
Outcomes
- To gain a perspective on the chemistry, pharmacology and efficacy demonstrated in clinical trials of the most used herbal supplements sold over the counter in the North American market and the mechanisms of the diseases targeted with these treatments.
