Course Description
Course information provided by the 2016-2017 Catalog.
Covers the basics of the theory of Lie algebras. Topics include nilpotent and solvable Lie algebras, Lie's and Engel's theorem, semisimple and reductive Lie algebras, universal enveloping algebra, and the classification of simple Lie algebras. More advanced topics such as the representation theory of semisimple Lie algebras and quantum groups may be covered depending on the instructor and the level of the audience.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: an advanced course in linear algebra at the level of MATH 4310.
