Course Description
Course information provided by the 2016-2017 Catalog.
Focuses on the role of social knowledge and social context in early cognitive and language development. Topics include learning and social cognition, parent-child conversations, collaborative learning, formal instruction, individual and cultural differences, and implications for education. Observations of young children are part of the course.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: HD 2300 or course in early childhood (e.g., HD 1150 or PSYCH 2090) plus a course in cognitive development.
Outcomes
- Design and propose an original experiment investigating a specific topic withing the broader topic of the course (young children's learning in social context). Learn how to write effectively (through multiple drafts and rewrites) and to speak effectively (oral presentation of proposed study).
