The arts of Southeast Asia are studied in their social context, because art plays a role in most of the salient occasions in life in traditional societies. Special emphasis is devoted to developments in Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia. Among topics covered are the shadow puppet theater of Java, textiles, architecture, sculpture, and Bali's performance tradition.
